The apps on Delta’s iPads at LaGuardia airport in New York

Posted by on June 29, 2011

A few weeks ago I got stuck for many hours at LaGuardia airport in New York (shocking, I realize, given how smooth air travel is these days). While at the Delta terminal I saw dozens of iPads installed next to small booths, designed for travelers to recharge and possibly play a game or order some food. We knew this was coming, but I was surprised to see them there nonetheless.

While the iPads were physically locked down, iOS was pretty much just stock, with the apps Delta wants you to use on one screen, and all the stock iOS apps (Mail, Safari, etc.) on the other screen. I didn't see anyone swipe to the second screen while I was at the terminal.

As you can see in the screenshot below, the apps Delta has added to the iPad are: Epicurious, Google Earth, SportsTap, Checkers Free HD, CNBC Real-Time for iPad, USA Today, Hangman Classic HD (the one I saw people playing the most, incidentally), Marketboard, Tic Tac Toe Free, The Weather Channel Max, WebMD, Delta's own app (of course), and what appear to be web shortcuts for a feedback form, about the food and beverage company which runs the services at the terminal and a pitch to have your apps on the iPads. Lastly, there's a simple menu app for Crust, which was at the Delta terminal.

Have any of you tried these out? Let us know your reactions in the comments.

Google+ design credited to original Macintosh team member Andy Hertzfeld

Posted by on June 28, 2011

You may have heard about Google+, the hot new sharing product from Google which went official today, and sounds cool (sounds cool, but remember how cool Wave and Buzz sounded? Let's just say we're reserving excitement so far). But one exciting thing about the new project is how cool and smooth it looks, and TechCrunch has noted the reason for that look, based on Steven Levy's reporting: it's designed in part by Andy Hertzfeld, one of the members of the original Macintosh team back in the 1980s.

Hertzfeld now works for Google, and supposedly he was let free to exercise his creative influence as he liked on the new Google+ system, creating something for the folks in Mountain View that looks like it might have come from the early days of the Cupertino company.

Hertzfeld even credits some of his influence at Google to Apple's own resurgence lately, saying that Apple's sky-high relevance in the tech and mobile industry may have "had a little bit to do" with his chance to help create Google+.

In other words, when you finally get one of those invites that are starting to float around, and finally log in to the system to see what it is and what it's like, take note of any Macintosh-related influences you might see. Odds are, they're Mr. Hertzfeld's work.

Video App Demo: ProtoTap

Posted by on June 27, 2011

Here's a look at ProtoTap from SeriousApps. Designed to facilitate designing apps for clients, ProtoTap looks like a relatively painless way to get your clients clicking around in a prototype without having to mess with a million emails. ProtoTap isn't available yet, and is still in beta testing.

ProtoTap is full of time-saving features, like pulling graphics directly from Dropbox. When you're ready to go through the app's UI, ProtoTap allows you and a client to go through the app together, but remotely. Check it out in the video below.

TUAW’s Daily iPhone App: Dragon’s Lair 2: Time Warp

Posted by on June 27, 2011

This one is, of course, the sequel to the Don Bluth classic, Dragon's Lair, now presented on the small iOS screen in all of its (let's be honest, somewhat aged) glory. Dragon's Lair 2 is subtitled Time Warp, and sends Dirk the Daring off through time in the hopes of saving the fair Princess Daphne.

Just like the first title, originally made popular on Laserdisc, this one offers branching paths that make up a pretty compelling adventure game, and just like the first iteration of the series on iOS, moves are made by pressing various virtual buttons on the screen. If you played the first Dragon's Lair and didn't get into it (like a fine wine, it does require a little appreciation for the age it was created in), you probably won't find much here to keep your interest.

But if you look back on the Dragon's Lair series with fondness and have been waiting for the sequel to drop, well, here you go. Dragon's Lair 2: Time Warp is now available on the App Store for US$2.99.

Music video created with iPad Brushes app

Posted by on June 23, 2011

This video for the song named "Undivided" by the band Blush is intriguing. First of all, because it's a pretty solid pop song (with, as far as I can tell, a rare safe-for-work appearance by Snoop Dogg himself). Second, because the simple but beautiful animation was entirely created by animator Shawn Harris on his iPad using the Brushes app.

It's very well done. You can tell that many of the parts are strictly done with fingerpainting, but he's also got some interesting photo editing effects, too. There's a "making of" video to watch as well that goes through some of the techniques used by Harris. Surprisingly, it was all done in the app -- he simply recorded each brushstroke as a frame of video, and used Brushes' own tools to output the final product. Good stuff!

Apple removed ThirdIntifada from App Store

Posted by on June 22, 2011

The Associated Press reports that Apple has yanked ThirdIntifada, a known anti-Israel app, from the App Store. This happened after Yuli Edelstein, Israel's information minister, and Jewish human rights group The Simon Wiesenthal Center complained to Apple.

The app, as seen in screenshots captured by Razorianfly, was used as an information hub for supporters. One of its uses was to organize anti-Israel protests.

Apple spokesman Tom Neumayer told AP, "... it violates the developer guidelines by being offensive to large groups of people."
