Etsy Find: Mmmmmmmm iPhone

Posted by on August 20, 2010

Just in time for the weekend, here's an awesome vinyl sticker for the back of your iPhone that has Homer Simpson taking a bite out of your favorite brand's logo. It's made by Etsy user apjam, and while I'm sure it's not quite, you know, ... legal, it is a pretty funny way to play with the logo design back there. If it sprinkles your donut (so to speak), you can pick one up for under US$5 (assuming they go back on sale at some point).

I usually like stickers for the back of MacBooks -- they always look pretty good and stay out of the way. But an iPhone sticker? I guess it looks OK, but I toss my iPhone around far too much to leave a sticker untouched back there. I guess if it was held on well and I was careful, it would be alright, but I don't know if the visual gag would be worth all of the scratches and scrapes. Have you put one of these on your iPhone?

Safari extension highlight: Awesome Screenshot

Posted by on August 19, 2010

With the addition of the Safari Extensions Gallery to Apple's website, TUAW will be highlighting extensions that we think are special, useful, or just plain fun.

Today's featured extension is Awesome Screenshot which lets you capture, annotate and share screenshots to awesomescreenshot.com. The way it works is pretty neat. Once you're at a webpage you'd like to share, simply click the extension's button. A toolbar appears that lets you annotate the page in a variety of ways. You can draw freely or use boxes, circle or lines. There's even a tool to blur out information that you'd rather keep hidden.

Once you're done, you can save the image as a local file or get a url to share with coworkers or friends. It's a useful tool that could make far-flung collaboration a little easier, all handled directly within the browser.

An iPad, a couple, and a wedding

Posted by on August 18, 2010

The iPad plays such a big part of some peoples' lives that you could almost say they're married to their iPads. And for others, they just get married by their iPads -- well, sort of.

The iPad helped facilitate the wedding of Aaron and Katie, as it made its rounds to the priest and then the bride and groom. Not only did bride Katie read her vows to husband Aaron from the iPad, she composed them on it as well.

While the couple's wedding was held outdoors, a gazebo provided shade to help make reading easier; the iPad's glass screen and the sunlight usually don't make a good combination for readability.

Offbeat Bride reports on creative wedding ideas; Aaron and Katie's iPad-enabled nuptials certainly qualify.

If you plan on using your iPad in your wedding, you might as well plan your wedding using an iPad. These include 100 Wedding Tips and the Wedding Guests app, which aims to help you make a final decision on who to invite to your wedding and who not to.

Kindle, iPad, and paper examined microscopically

Posted by on August 17, 2010

The above image is a picture of the iPad's screen, multiplied by 24 times over. Keith Peters at Bit-101 used his new USB microscope to examine a few different e-reader displays up really close, and the results are definitely a fun read. The iPad doesn't do too well, actually -- I think the Kindle looks much cleaner, although there's some debate about that in the comments, so each to his own. At any rate, it's cool to see how these displays "work" -- the actual pixels going into the picture that our eyes just collate into full text. The 400x newspaper, book, and magazine closeups are very interesting as well. With all of the digital display talk going around, you tend to forget what those displays are actually trying to recreate, which is really very organic smears on a thin fabric.

Unfortunately, Keith didn't get his hands on the Retina Display, and you'd assume that's a game changer. With four times the pixels seen in the image above, the iPhone 4's display probably gives the Kindle a nice challenge, and might even start competing with the actual paper printing. Still, until that display makes its way to the tablet, this is the best we've got for now.

TUAW Review: PinPoint Lightning wants to keep you alive

Posted by on August 16, 2010

Wherever you live, lightning can be dangerous if you spend a lot of time outdoors. In the USA alone, an average of 58 people per year are killed by proximity to lightning strikes. PinPoint Lightning (US$5.99), a new app from MyWeather, LLC, hopes to reduce that number by providing push notifications of lightning strikes within 30 miles of your present location within seconds of a strike.

This app only provides lightning strike data for the USA and Canada, with information coming from the National Lightning Detection Network in the 50 states, and from Environment Canada in the Great White North. The strike data used by PinPoint Lightning is rather expensive, which explains the rather high cost of the app. For hikers, bikers, golfers, and anyone else who spends time working or playing outside, $5.99 is a small cost to pay for advance warning of nearby lightning activity.

TUAW received a review copy of the software, and PinPoint Lightning is an extremely well-done and functional app that does precisely what it is designed for. Read on for a full review of PinPoint Lightning.

No Comment: LEGO iPad stand shows ingenuity, parsimony

Posted by on August 16, 2010

We could say "Nice use of found materials in that iPad stand! It's a shame that the next person who tries to build out the LEGO City Truck is going to be short a few pieces, but that's the way the brick bounces sometimes."

We won't, though, because this image is a genuine No Comment.

P.S. Braaaiiiins.

The iPad as an art gallery tour guide on Celebrity Cruises

Posted by on August 14, 2010

As a bona fide fan of cruise ships and iPads, I was happy to see a short note from CruiseInd.com today outlining what Celebrity Cruises is doing with the iPad on their Solstice Class ships.

Starting tomorrow (August 15th), iPads will be available on the Celebrity Solstice, and the sister ships Eclipse and Equinox will see a group of iPads on board starting August 21st. Guests can launch a custom app to be able to view the collection of art on their particular ship. The Solstice class ships currently in service, Solstice, Equinox, and Eclipse, have a total of 14,000 original contemporary art works between them that decorate the various decks. Deck plans are displayed on the iPad, and guest can touch artworks represented on the plans to see the exact location, title, artist's name, medium, a description, and an image of the work.

This isn't the first time that iPads have been used on Celebrity's ships -- the cruise line uses the devices to display the menu and wine list at the Qsine specialty restaurant on the Celebrity Eclipse. Celebrity also features the Mac-centric iLearn program on the Celebrity Solstice, Equinox, and Summit, a series of classes that mimic the One-to-One experience available in Apple retail stores.

It's refreshing to see Celebrity embracing Apple technology on their ships, as most other cruise ships seem to feature old PCs running Windows XP in their Internet lounges.

App Review: Set Pro HD

Posted by on August 13, 2010

The game of Set is now available in more stores than ever before, from big box retailers to independent game stores. Finally, a full-featured digital version is also ready and waiting for your iPad in the App Store.

There have been Set apps before, even one officially licensed by Set Enterprises, but this is the real deal. All the criticisms we had of the other Set app, which was iPhone/iPod touch only, are totally wiped away by this new version, and if you haven't been introduced to this quick-thinking game of finding matches - or if you're already a fan - we have no hesitation recommending the new Set Pro HD app. Yes, it's relatively expensive at $7.99, but it is quite gorgeous and the gameplay is top-notch. Read on to see if it's time to upgrade your Set cards.

Android sales worldwide pass iPhone totals for Q2 2010

Posted by on August 12, 2010

Gartner is reporting that worldwide sales of mobile phones running Android OS have surpassed iPhone sales for the second quarter of 2010. 10.6 million phones running the Android OS shipped during the last quarter, representing a 17.2% 2010 market share, compared to 8.74 million iOS phones, representing a 14.2% 2010 market share. The two top dogs are still Symbian, with 41.2% of the market and RIM with 18.2% of the market.

Google's cheerleaders may cry foul, but to be fair to Apple, during the quarter they shipped exactly 3 phone models with iOS on them while carriers shipped over 20 different models of Android phones. We could also mention that a true Apples-to-apples comparison would include the non-phone iOS devices (the iPod touch and iPad) which continue to expand the iOS installed base at a furious pace.

Also, Apple was dealing with a transition to iPhone 4, which lead to constraint issues with the iPhone 3G and 3GS. As Gartner pointed out in its report, "Apple's sales would have been higher if it had not had to face tight inventory management in preparation for the arrival of the iPhone 4 at the end of the second quarter of 2010. Apple also suffered from some supply constraint on the new device. We expect that a wider global roll out of iPhone 4 will sustain Apple's sales momentum throughout the second half of 2010."

Will the rest of 2010 be the Revenge of the iOS? The fact that the iPhone 4 is still sold out at over half of Apple's US retail stores is a big check mark in the "yes" column. Whichever way this goes, it looks like one thing is certain -- RIM is virtually sure to lose its second place position next quarter as both Android and iOS phones increase in popularity and market saturation.
